BalticClimate Transnational Seminar 2

The seminar was held on March 22-24, 2010, gathering more than 50 participants representing BalticClimate Project Partner and Associated Organizations.

The main focus during the event was on the Vulnerability Assessment Phase results from the Target Areas, which were comprised, evaluated and integrated for further analysis during the workshops guided by Work Package 3 leaders Mattias Hjerpe and Julie Wilk from Centre for Climate Science and Policy Research, Linköping University.
 
Challenges and chances for the business life related to selected Implementation Cases in transport, energy, housing and agriculture were discussed within sectoral groups from the aspect of sustainable development in Target Areas introducing the SWOT element of the BalticClimate project. The outline for the following working phase “Capitalization of Climate Change – C3” was introduced by Hannu Koponen representing the Work Package 4 leader, Regional Council of Central Finland and Maija Suutarinen, Jykes Ltd.
 
During the group work led by Heidi Tuhkanen from Stockholm Environment Institute Tallinn Office the first drafts and structure of the BalticClimate ICT-Toolkit were outlined.
 
Leena Rossi, General Planning Architect of the City of Jyväskylä gave a presentation on Spatial Planning in Jyväskylä, which was complemented by a bus excursion later in the evening.
 
On the last day of the seminar two parallel sessions were organised:
  • Criteria on sustainable development in planning were analysed in the group work for planners
  • A round table discussion “Accounting for climate change in political decisions” was organised for politicians and political decision makers as one of the main target audiences of the BalticClimate project. During these discussions the focus was on the information needs on climate change for political decision making, further requirements from political side and dealing with the uncertainties and climate scenarios.
 
The three day Transnational Seminar was concluded by an excursion to nature adventure centre Varjola, where participants were given an opportunity to experiencing and getting to know nature tourism as development factor, as well as received a presentation on farm tourism near Jyväskylä influenced by climate change.
